If you arrive at Sälka early in the afternoon and think it is too early to put up your tent, you can continue 8 km to the Tjäktja Pass. Up to the 900-meter level, there are still opportunities to find places to camp. After that, however, the path turns upward and once you are up in the pass heading toward the Tjäktja Mountain Hut there are few places to camp and little access to water. If the weather is bad, there is no shelter where you can stop.
The Tjäktja Pass is one of the more strenuous parts of the trek. The Pass's highest point, which is also the Kungsleden trail's highest point, reaches 1,140 m.a.s.l., so take it slowly and rest often. If nothing else, you can say that you wanted to look at the fantastic view. Do not walk uphill so quickly that you get blisters on your feet. It is beautiful here!
On the other side of the Tjäkja Pass stretches a fascinating and very unique moonscape. Stay on the planks. Balancing on the stones wears down your feet. The trail does not pass the Tjäktja Mountain Hut, which is on the left side of the creek. If you want to stop at the cabin, you will have to take a small detour over the bridge. The trail continues approximately 1.5 km to the checkpoint, not far from the Sielmmajiira stream. Here you will find large, polished rocks that are perfect for resting or eating lunch.
The stretch between Sälka and Tjäktja takes 4-5 hours, not counting breaks. You should camp either before the Tjäktja Pass or continue past Checkpoint Tjäktja and camp along the trail to Alesjaure.
